Navigating the dark and treacherous world of Mournstead in Lords of the Fallen reveals numerous secrets and hidden encounters that can easily be missed. One of the most intriguing early-game mysteries involves finding a petrified NPC known to many players as the stone woman. Freeing her from her rocky prison unlocks a deeper questline and introduces a helpful ally named Kukajin who can assist you during intense boss battles.
Finding the Petrified NPC in Forsaken Fen
To begin this quest, you must progress through the main storyline until you reach the murky depths of the Forsaken Fen. While exploring the swampy pathways, keep your ears open for the distinct sound of a woman humming a sorrowful tune nearby. Following this melancholic audio cue will lead you to a hidden alcove situated just past a shortcut bridge near the main bonfire.
Inside this secluded cave, you will find a detailed statue of a woman covered in moss and vines. This figure is actually Kukajin, an unyielding mercenary who has been completely immobilized by a powerful magical petrification curse. Approaching her statue lets you interact with her, triggering dialogue where she desperately pleads for someone to break the spell.
How to Safely Free the Stone Woman
Liberating Kukajin requires casting a specific status-cleansing magic or using specialized holy items rather than attacking her mechanically. The most straightforward method is to throw an Empyrean Grenade directly at her feet to wash away the petrification instantly. Alternatively, players utilizing radiant magic can cast the Sanctify spell or a Healing Sigil right next to her statue to trigger the exact same restoration effect.
You must be exceptionally careful during this process because utilizing standard physical weaponry or offensive magic will break her stone form into pieces and kill her instantly. Some players have also noted that throwing items incorrectly can sometimes register as hostile damage and fail the questline entirely. Once successfully cured, she will thank you for your assistance and mention her plans to relocate back to the central hub area.
Claiming Rewards and Advancing Kukajin Questline
After you successfully break the curse, remember to collect Wilmarc's Catalyst which is located on the ground right behind her original position. This powerful item serves as an excellent tool for radiant spellcasters looking to optimize their magical builds early in the adventure. Afterward, make sure to rest at a nearby vestige so the game world can refresh her physical position.
When you return to Skyrest Bridge, you will find Kukajin resting comfortably in one of the alcoves near the central hub fire. Speaking with her here officially opens up her availability as a summonable mercenary for several major boss fights across the map. However, remember that she expects payment for her combat services, and failing to pay her fees will permanently break her trust.
